Installation

When I talk of installation, I’m talking about custom cabinets. Furniture will get plopped down on the floor and look great. Custom cabinetry will require a little more finesse.

After I wrote the word finesse just now, I went and looked it up to make sure it’s the right word. Turns out it is. Definition of finesse: 1) Refinement and delicacy of performance, execution, or artisanship. 2) skillful handling of a situation; adroit maneuvering.

The word totally fits the description of what happens on install. Here’s what normally happens on an install. (well, maybe slightly exaggerated)

Ceiling, walls, and floor are crooked

Cabinetry is not.

The solution is cabinetry that maintains it’s straight and levelness while conforming to the fluid surroundings. Any imperfections that exist in the surroundings will not be accentuated by a shadow or gap, rather the cabinetry will unify the surroundings, and a wall that is completely crooked will usually go unnoticed.

The ability to do this is thought out and planned for in the drafting stage. With pre-fabricated cabinets there is not the freedom to do this, and as a solution you will see various moldings applied to cover unsightly gaps. It is possible that the moldings that I’m referring to go unnoticed to most. To me, the molding is worst than a gap, because the molding is not part of the design, it serves to muddy what should be clean.

There are many other details that go into installation. Ability to observe the surroundings and come up with really bright ideas are really helpful traits that an installer should have. Making custom work in the shop is a piece of cake, it being a controlled and steady environment, compared to the dynamic environment of installation.
